How to Skate Backwards on Roller Skates: Step by Step

Skating backward is the skill that makes people stop and say, “Wow, they can really skate.” It feels strange at first, but with the right stance and a few simple drills, most skaters can learn it in a handful of sessions.

Before you start

You should be comfortable skating forward, turning and stopping. Wear full protective gear — backward falls are the riskiest kind — and practice on a smooth, empty surface or during a slower rink session near the wall.

Step 1: The backward stance

  • Feet about hip-width apart
  • Knees bent deeply
  • Weight slightly forward over the balls of your feet — not on your heels
  • Chest up, arms out in front for balance

Leaning back is the most common mistake. Even though you’re traveling backward, keep your weight forward. Your hips should feel like they’re “sitting” while your chest stays over your knees.

Step 2: Backward lemons (swizzles)

This is the easiest way to start rolling backward:

  1. Start with your heels apart and toes pointed together (pigeon-toed).
  2. Push your heels out so your feet move apart.
  3. When your feet are about shoulder-width or a bit more, turn your toes outward and pull your heels back together.
  4. Repeat. Your feet trace a lemon shape on the floor, and you’ll roll backward.

Bend your knees as your feet go out and rise slightly as they come back in.

Step 3: Look over your shoulder

You need to see where you’re going. Turn your head and look over one shoulder without twisting your whole body. Switch shoulders regularly so you can check both sides, and always look before you start moving.

Step 4: Backward C-cuts

Once lemons feel good, try C-cuts for more power:

  1. Glide backward on one foot with your knee bent.
  2. With the other foot, push out in a curved “C” shape, starting toes-in and pushing the heel outward.
  3. Bring the pushing foot back under you and repeat, then switch feet.

Alternate feet for smooth, continuous backward skating.

Step 5: Slow down and stop

  • Backward plow: Point your toes outward, heels in, and push your toes out to slow down.
  • Toe stop stop (quads): Lift your heels and drag one or both toe stops behind you while keeping your knees bent.
  • Turn to forward: Turn around and use any forward stop.

Drills to practice

  • Wall walk: Hold the rink wall and practice backward lemons.
  • Partner pull: A friend skates forward slowly while holding your hands as you practice stance — they control the speed.
  • Count the lemons: Try 5 in a row, then 10, then a full lap.

Common problems

  • Falling backward: Bend your knees more and shift weight forward.
  • Not moving: Make your lemons wider and push more with your heels.
  • Spinning in circles: Push equally with both feet and keep your shoulders square.

Backward skating opens the door to transitions, spins and rink dancing. Take it slow, keep your weight forward and you’ll be rolling backward in no time.
